As discussed on the mailinglist (http://gradle.1045684.n5.nabble.com/run-task-for-Java-Groovy-plugin-tp3347810p3348535.html), a common application plugin can be used to manage application related tasks (e.g. "run", "install" ...)

Hi there. I've created a basic application plugin with a run task based on JavaExec. see the pullrequest at https://github.com/gradle/gradle/pull/12

I spent a bit more time on this application plugin and added a distZip and install task with generated windows
+ unix start scripts based on the gradle start scripts. The according pull request is available at https://github.com/gradle/gradle/pull/15

regards,
René
